Mistfall Hunter Solo Guide: What You Can Do Alone & the Trio-Map Workarounds

How far a solo player can actually get in Mistfall Hunter: the Hallowgrove-only rule, which main-quest steps break for solos, the Chaos-difficulty workaround, fill-off trio queueing, and the official word on duos.

Last updated: 8/20/2026

Quick Answer: Solo matchmaking exists only on Hallowgrove, the first map, in Normal and Chaos difficulty. The second map, Brandrgarde, is trio-only, and parts of the main quest chain route through it β€” the loudest complaint about the game. It is not a hard lock. Players have completed the contested quest steps solo on Chaos-difficulty Hallowgrove, and you can enter Brandrgarde alone by queueing trio with fill slots turned off (or with randoms, fill on). What solos genuinely cannot reach yet: Cataclysm difficulty and its Holy weapons β€” though the developers confirmed on August 5 that a Brandrgarde Solo Mode covering both Normal and Cataclysm is coming in the middle of Season 1 in September. There is still no dedicated duo mode, officially ruled out "in the short term."

Version note: Current for the August 19 live update, with player reports checked through August 20, 2026. Assembled from developer posts and player reports, linked inline; solo access is the most patch-sensitive topic on this page β€” the developers confirmed a September Solo Mode on August 5, and the August 6 update opened the Einherjar Mist Lords.

What Solo Actually Gets You

  • Hallowgrove, the first map, has a true solo queue: other solo players, AI monsters and bots. It runs in Normal and Chaos difficulty. Chaos holds the better loot and the quest-relevant boss fights.
  • The camp layer is identical for solo players β€” warehouse, Auction House, talents, forging, camp building, seasonal Battle Pass. Nothing meta-side is squad-gated.
  • Ranked ("Path of Glory") works solo. Enabling it is a per-player choice, and per the official DevNote you only lose rank points when you fail to extract.
  • The game is balanced around trios first. The developers' AMA says solo and trio get separately tuned balance passes. Expect solo fights to feel more rock-paper-scissors.

The Quest-Chain Breakpoints

The game never tells you where the quest chain stops working alone. Players mapped it out instead β€” community-tested, not officially documented (main report, whose author posted the workarounds in a later edit):

Quest stepStatus for solo players
Early steps on HallowgroveNo issues β€” designed for solo
First Mist Lord requirementLooks trio-gated, but completable solo via Chaos-difficulty Hallowgrove bosses
Otto / Harald / Salmar stepsDoable solo by farming Chaos-mode bosses ("General Harald" is the boss fight the July 30 patch touched)
Einherjar (hard-mode) SalmarOpen since the August 6 client update, which also started Dried Flower Knot drops (patch notes)
Cataclysm difficulty / Holy weapon partsTrio-map only β€” the launch announcement lists Cataclysm as Brandrgarde content, and officially "the most common way to obtain top-tier gear is by defeating Mist Lords on Cataclysm difficulty"

Two things to do with that table:

  1. Don't abandon a quest because it names a boss. Check whether the target spawns on Chaos Hallowgrove before you assume you need a squad.
  2. Buy Brandrgarde-only camp upgrade materials off the Auction House. You'll pay a markup, but nothing in camp progression is hard-locked β€” see the Market & Warehouse Guide for how not to overpay.

Getting Into Brandrgarde Anyway

The trio queue has fill slots, and that gives solo players two different doors into the second map. Both are documented by players (solo-progression thread), not by the developers.

Option 0: If you're a duo β€” queue trio, the game fills the third

The game never says this, so start here: two friends can queue the trio map together and the system fills the third slot with a random. That's the closest thing to a duo mode that exists today. You keep your partner and absorb one stranger, and the etiquette below applies to that one player.

Option 1: Fill on β€” play with randoms

You get matched into a full trio. It works, and it's how most solo players see Brandrgarde. Set expectations first: random teammates loot whatever they reach first, wander off alone, and extract on their own clock. "Loot ninjas" are the subreddit's most upvoted complaint category. So stay near the team. Ping before you commit to a fight. Treat anything a teammate loots as gone. If a quest step needs a specific objective, say so in chat at the start β€” task progression is shared while you're grouped, and some randoms will cooperate.

Option 2: Fill off β€” enter alone

Turning fill slots off puts you in Brandrgarde alone against full squads. It sounds suicidal, but a well-received community report calls it the most reliable way to grind trio-map quests without a coordinated squad, and several replies corroborate. Run it like this:

  • Avoid full teams entirely. This is a stealth run, not a war. Use the third-person camera and the mist to move around high-traffic areas, and carry the prop-disguise tactical item.
  • Take 1v1s only against stragglers who've split from their trio, and win fast, before teammates rotate in.
  • Farm elites and high-loot areas the trios haven't reached, then get out. You don't need to win the map, only the extraction.
  • Hit task objectives. They're tuned for three players and a solo who completes them keeps all of it β€” "you can't go wrong getting 3 task nodes or 3 chests," as one reply puts it.
  • Play a stealth-leaning kit. That thread's author runs Seer and recommends Shadowstrix for the same style (player suggestion, not a tier list).

Expect to be hunted anyway: some players in the same thread report being chased by trios every run. Bring gear you can afford to lose, load your safe pocket (what survives death), and read the PvP Class Counters guide for the fights you can't avoid.

Duo Status: Officially "Not in the Short Term"

From the developers' pre-launch community AMA:

  • No dedicated duo matchmaking in the short term. Their stated reasons are matchmaking balance and not splitting the player pool, which would lengthen queue times across all modes.
  • Season Tasks were promised for August 12 and did not ship. On August 7 the developers said the next client update would launch Soul Harvest and open Season Tasks. The August 12 update launched Soul Harvest and delivered the largest fix batch yet, but Season Tasks are not mentioned anywhere in the notes and no new date has been given. This matters more to solo players than to anyone else: Season Tasks was the seasonal progression track you could work without a trio map run. Assume it is still coming and plan without it.
  • A Brandrgarde Solo Mode is now confirmed. On August 5 the developers committed to Solo Mode for both Normal and Cataclysm difficulty of Brandrgarde, arriving "in the middle of Season 1 in September" (Wave 3 roadmap). They flagged one caveat: two new modes will split the matchmaking queue and change solo class balance, which they'll keep evaluating. This supersedes the earlier "may open for a limited time" wording.

Demand is loud β€” the top request threads sit at 230+ and 113+ upvotes, and new solo/duo threads appear daily on Steam and Reddit (one August thread claims some resources drop only on the trio map and can't be bought; single report, unverified). Until the September Solo Mode lands, the workarounds still apply: build progression on Chaos Hallowgrove and fill-off runs.

Soul Harvest: What It Means for a Solo Player

Soul Harvest went live on August 12 and it can trigger in Hallowgrove, which is the map solo players actually live on. Read the resonance rule before you pick up a Cocoon:

Carrying a Soul Cocoon reveals your position to every other Cocoon carrier on the map, permanently, for as long as you hold it. You see them too, but that trade is much worse for you than for a trio. They get three players converging on a marked target; you get advance warning of a fight you cannot win.

The altar needs two Cocoons, and it only opens after the match has run a while. That is two pickups plus a trip to a fixed location, on a clock, while marked.

The decision rule: if you are solo and a Cocoon is on the ground with the resonance list showing other carriers, the cheaper play is the single-Cocoon hand-in to Richie for the team reward, not the altar ritual. It is one pickup, the in-match merchant is somewhere you were probably going anyway, and it ends the resonance sooner. Chase the altar only when the resonance list is empty or the match is quiet.

The developers did not publish the trigger chance, the time threshold or the reward tables. Treat everything above as reading the mechanic, not measuring it.

One thing that does help solo: the higher the map's Gyldening Intensity, the more likely Soul Harvest is to trigger. If you are avoiding high-intensity runs because of the PvP pressure, that is now also a choice to skip this content.

The part of Soul Harvest you cannot reach at all. It also triggers in Brandrgarde, and Brandrgarde has no solo queue β€” so the Cataclysm-difficulty version of this event is trio-only for as long as that stays true. A player raised exactly that on the board two days in: "Currently solo players can't do Cataclysm Soul Harvest due to no solo queue. Will solo be added in time to not miss out on part of the event?" No developer answer. The official position is still the one from August 6 β€” solo mode covering Brandrgarde on Normal and Cataclysm, arriving mid-Season 1 in September β€” which lands after a seasonal event that is live now.

What that means for your planning: treat Hallowgrove Soul Harvest as the whole of this content for you, and do not bank on the Brandrgarde rewards arriving inside the season. If the event carries seasonal progress you care about, the only route to the Cataclysm half before September is finding a trio.

What the runs pay out. The August 15 notice spells out the currency loop for the first time: completing Soul Harvest runs earns exclusive tokens, and those tokens spend at the Mistchaser Shop β€” the season-exclusive Holy-quality Soulbound Serpent Crystal, a Holy Material Selection Chest, Moonlight Nectar and Soul Coins. Moonlight Nectar and a Legendary Material Selection Chest were also added to the Fate Chart Shop. For a solo player that matters because it is a token economy, not a drop table: Hallowgrove runs you can actually finish still convert into the shop currency, so the Brandrgarde half being closed costs you volume rather than access.

What the August 19 Update Changed for Solo

Three items, and the first one removes a death that was never your fault.

You now get brief invulnerability when entering a Mist Lord's room. Entering a Lord room alone is the highest-risk moment of a solo run β€” you arrive without a team to absorb the opening, and anything already swinging at the door used to land free. The window is not quantified in the notes, so treat it as enough to orient yourself and not as a shield to plan around.

The Scavenger Squad now refreshes its required materials across every mode once you complete a task and claim the rewards. That matters more solo than in trio: your material intake per run is smaller, so a stale requirement you could not fill used to block the track for longer.

Mercenary took a solo-specific nerf, and it is the second time the developers have separated the two modes by number rather than by promise. One talent's energy consumption is now higher in solo mode specifically, alongside a broad set of cooldown increases and a shield reduction that apply everywhere. Meanwhile a Withered Knight skill got a cooldown cut in trio mode specifically. If you main either class, your solo numbers and your trio numbers are now formally different β€” the mode split the developers described in their AMA is being applied per-skill.

The notes do not give numbers for any of it, which is the standing complaint about this game's patch notes and the reason player measurement is worth reading. One useful figure surfaced in the Withered Knight thread: a player states Parry's raw cooldown went from 20 seconds to 15, and separately another reports that with the Tactical Prep talent running it still reads 15 as before. Both can be true at once, and together they give a decision rule: if you run Tactical Prep, this buff does close to nothing for you; if you do not, it is a real five seconds. Neither figure is official.

Season Tasks Are Not Fully Completable Solo

Season Tasks opened after the August 12 update, and one of them cannot be done alone. (The August 19 update fixed incorrect text in Objective 2 β€” a wording correction, not a change to what the tasks require, so the blocker below still stands.) A player lays out the blocker: a task asks for three executes, and you cannot execute in solo mode. Dying resets the chain, and the investigation spot that gates it is on Hallowgrove.

The reply on the thread is the community's settled position rather than a workaround β€” this game has been trio-first since the first playtest, and the advice is to find people or accept the incomplete list. Nobody has posted a solo route, and there is no developer answer.

The decision rule: audit the task list before you commit a week to it. Read each task for verbs that need a second player β€” execute, revive, share β€” and treat those as trio-only. Finish the rest solo, and count the seasonal reward track as partial rather than planning around a full clear. If you were going to queue trio anyway, batch the execute-type tasks into those sessions instead of spending solo runs failing at them.

If You're Struggling Solo

Three pressure valves from the subreddit's most practical tips thread:

  1. Buy combat bags from Twig at camp. They're cheap preset loadouts that make deaths sting less while you learn. Pair them with your safe pocket.
  2. Farm your losing streak. Players consistently report that repeated deaths put you into bot-heavy matches (community-tested; the developers confirm bots pad lobbies, but not the streak rule). Use those matches to drill combos and stock your safe pocket.
  3. Wear your good gear. "It's not your gear, it was just your turn to use it" is the mindset the genre demands, and gear you're afraid to wear is gear doing nothing.

Solo Queue Beats Random Trio, and Regulars Say So Flatly

If you do not have two friends, do not treat matchmade trio as the upgrade over solo. The consensus on this hardened through mid-August, and it is unusually blunt for a forum:

"PUG trio is the most miserable gameplay experience in this game. The return is minimal to none. Just go solo or trio with friends."

Two other players in that thread agree, and the reasons they give are specific rather than general disappointment:

  • Loot disputes are the norm, not the exception. One long-form complaint describes matches turning into chest-grabbing races where even taking only your share gets you accused of taking everything.
  • Fill quality is a lottery you pay for. Reported failure modes are level-1 teammates and squads too cautious to push a half-dead enemy team, then dying slowly while retreating.
  • You cannot fix it with communication, because you do not get to pick who fills.

The decision rule: premade trio > solo > matchmade trio. That inverts the usual assumption that more players is more safety, and it matters because the modes are not otherwise equivalent β€” solo has its own balance pass, and Brandrgarde still has no solo queue at all.

One thing solo does not protect you from: players teaming inside solo matches. That is against the rules and reportable in game, and it remains one of the loudest complaints on the board. See what the developers have said about illegal teaming rather than arguing it in the forums.
