Machine Party Bugs & Fixes: Black Screen Fix, Join Timeouts & Playing With Randoms

Current Machine Party launch status: the black-screen-on-boot fix (--rendering-driver opengl3), join timeouts, the Steam Deck room-code problem, no matchmaking and how players actually find lobbies, and where the developers take bug reports.

Last updated: 7/31/2026

Quick Answer: Machine Party's launch (July 30, 2026) has one headline technical issue: a black screen on boot β€” music and UI sounds play, but nothing renders. The player-found fix works for most: add --rendering-driver opengl3 to the game's Steam launch options (Properties β†’ Launch Options), which drops the game from its Vulkan renderer to OpenGL; a graphics-driver reinstall cleared one other case. The louder story isn't a bug at all: there is no matchmaking, no lobby browser, and no bots β€” you play via 18-digit room codes, and the community has improvised its own solutions (below). Also on the board: join timeouts between friends, no rejoin after a crash, a Steam Deck room-code input problem, and scattered one-off reports we're tracking. The developers collect bugs through a pinned Google Form and say fixes will be announced via Steam posts β€” no patch has shipped yet as of July 31. Local co-op is officially due late August.

Black Screen on Launch β€” Player-Verified Fix

Symptom: the game boots to a black screen. The telltale detail from reports: the game is actually running β€” the cursor changes to the in-game one, UI hover sounds play, music plays β€” but nothing draws. At least six players reported it independently on launch day across multiple threads and languages; reinstalling and verifying files doesn't help.

Fix (player-found, confirmed by multiple players): right-click Machine Party in Steam β†’ Properties β†’ Launch Options β†’ add:

--rendering-driver opengl3

Players in two separate threads confirm this clears it. Why it plausibly works (our inference, flagged as such): Machine Party's minimum specs require Vulkan support, and the flag is the engine's standard switch to the OpenGL renderer β€” so the black screen looks like a Vulkan rendering-path failure on affected setups, and OpenGL routes around it.

Second workaround (one confirmation): a full graphics-driver reinstall fixed the crash-on-launch case for one player on a GTX 1060 6GB, per a community guide. Try the launch option first; it's less invasive.

Still black after both? One report (dual-GPU laptop: RX 6600M plus integrated graphics) has the game silently exiting a few seconds after a black window, with nothing working so far β€” no developer reply yet. If that's you, file it through the official form (below) with your specs; dual-GPU setups are worth mentioning explicitly.

No Matchmaking, No Lobby Browser, No Bots β€” How People Actually Play

This is the single most complained-about thing at launch, so here's the complete honest picture:

  • In-game, you can only join via an 18-digit room code. There is no public lobby list, no matchmaking queue, no bots to fill seats, and no in-game voice or text chat. The developers have made no statement about adding any of these β€” the only confirmed multiplayer roadmap item is local co-op in late August (official announcement).
  • Room codes work for strangers. Anyone with a code can join β€” which the community immediately weaponized: the game's Steam discussion board is functioning as a de facto public lobby, with a steady stream of "join up" threads sharing live room codes (they made up the large majority of all launch-day threads when we counted).
  • Unofficial Discords have filled the gap. There is no official Discord; several community-run "find players" servers appeared within a day β€” the largest advertised 260+ members on day one β€” and are easy to find via the game's Steam discussion board and community guides section. One player also reports finding a group through the Buckshot Roulette publisher's community Discord. We deliberately don't hard-link invite codes here (they rot fast); the discussion board's LFG threads are the reliable index.
  • Every player needs their own copy β€” there's no single-player mode and no free guest option, so a full table is 2-4 owned copies.

Join Timeout Between Friends (No Fix Yet)

One launch-day thread: two friends trying to join each other's games get a 2-second load, then an instant "time out" β€” both directions. No replies, no developer response, no workaround documented yet. If you hit it, the usual suspects (one player hosting instead of the other, restarting both clients) are untested guesses β€” report it through the form below with your network setup.

No Rejoin After a Crash

Confirmed by an early request thread: if the game crashes mid-session, there is no way to rejoin the run in progress β€” you either restart the whole session with your group or sit out the remainder (a full all-minigames session runs roughly 40-60 minutes, so this hurts). The thread explicitly asks the developers for a rejoin option; no response yet. Until then: treat a mid-session crash as a group decision point, and if your machine is black-screen-prone, apply the launch-option fix before game night.

Steam Deck / SteamOS: Room Codes Can't Be Pasted

Two independent reports (a Chinese-language thread and a launch review): in SteamOS's gaming mode, the copy-room-ID flow doesn't work, and there's no way to type a code in manually β€” which currently blocks the join flow on Deck. Both reports ask for the same fix (show codes on screen / allow manual entry); no developer reply yet. If you're primarily on Deck, know that joining lobbies is the rough edge right now β€” the game itself runs (it's a Godot title with low requirements and native Linux support), but getting into a friend's session may require desktop mode gymnastics.

One-Off Reports We're Tracking

  • Cheating (one day-one report): a player reports seeing aimbot and teleporting already. Single report, no corroboration in the threads we read β€” but with join-by-code lobbies of strangers, moderation tools are thin. Noted; we'll escalate this section if reports multiply.
  • Klubnikaverse bundle purchase problems (three reports): players report the Steam bundle advertising Machine Party at a lower price while the game is missing from the bundle contents, plus inconsistent pricing between store views. That's a storefront configuration issue, not a game bug β€” no official response yet; if affected, Steam support is the channel.

Where to Report Bugs (Official Channel)

The publisher pinned a "Bugs & Issues β€” Report them here" thread on launch eve pointing to a Google Form, with the commitment: "fixes and updates will be shared via Steam posts." So: form for reports, Steam announcements for fixes. As of July 31, no post-launch patch has shipped β€” when the first one lands, this page gets rechecked top to bottom.

Sources: launch-window Steam forum threads (black-screen threads with the player-confirmed launch-option fix, the join-timeout report, the rejoin request, the Steam Deck room-code reports, the cheating and bundle reports), a community troubleshooting guide (driver reinstall), the pinned official bug-report thread and the developers' local co-op announcement, the Steam store page (Vulkan minimum requirement), and launch-week reviews for the matchmaking picture. Single reports are labeled as such; our Vulkan/OpenGL explanation is flagged as inference. Compiled July 31, 2026, at the launch build β€” we re-check daily during the launch window.
