Quick Answer: Building in League of Legends Classic means relearning Season 3 logic. Start Doran's item or flask-and-potions. Buy wards on every character. Rush gold-generation items and Sightstone on support, build out of Hunter's Machete into Spirit Stone items or Wriggle's Lantern in the jungle, and treat item actives like Deathfire Grasp and Shurelya's Reverie as part of your damage and engage. Before any of that, your build starts in the lobby: a rune page (9 Marks, 9 Seals, 9 Glyphs, 3 Quintessences) and a 30-point mastery page. This page covers the system and role-by-role builds; for what every item does, see the items guide.
Version note: Current as of patch 26.16 (August 12, 2026). Rune, gold and systems numbers come from Riot's official 26.16 patch notes; item availability is checked against the official League of Legends Wiki's League Classic item list, with quoted item numbers being the wiki's archived Season 3 values, patch-labeled inline. Treat item numbers as era reference points β Riot may tune values inside Classic.
How Building Works in S3 (and What Modern Instincts Get Wrong)
If you started playing after 2015, these are the differences that change decisions. Every item named below is confirmed in Classic's shop, per the wiki's item list for the mode.
- No mythics, no item haste economy. You assemble stat lines from components. Power spikes come from completed legendaries (Trinity Force, Infinity Edge, Rabadon's Deathcap) and from actives.
- Item actives matter. Deathfire Grasp is an execute button, Shurelya's Reverie is a team engage and disengage tool, Randuin's Omen slows an entire dive. Plan on two or three buttons besides your abilities.
- Gold-generation items exist. Heart of Gold, Philosopher's Stone, Kage's Lucky Pick and Avarice Blade drip passive gold. The whole support economy, plus some mid and top variants, is built on them.
- Vision is an item slot, not a trinket. Everyone can carry Stealth Wards and Vision Wards. Supports buy Sightstone for refillable wards and often Oracle's Elixir to sweep. No free ward trinket does this job for you.
- Sustain starts are real. Crystalline Flask plus potions is a standard lane-survival opening alongside the Doran's items.
- Boots are a bigger choice. Pick between Mercury's Treads, Ninja Tabi, Sorcerer's Shoes and Ionian Boots of Lucidity, often early. Homeguard now arrives for everyone at the 15-minute mark; patch 26.16 removed the early-game version that shipped at launch.
What Patch 26.16 Changed About Buying Things
Three economy and objective changes from the August 12 patch feed straight into build decisions:
- Passive gold up, minion gold down. Ambient gold now starts at 90 seconds instead of 65, then pays 10.5 / 11.5 / 13 per 5 seconds at 1 / 15 / 25 minutes, while melee minions dropped from 20 to 19 gold and ranged from 15 to 14. Riot's summary: roughly 215 more gold per champion over a game from passive income, "with the average laner roughly treading water." Read: farming is worth slightly less relative to just being alive, which quietly helps the gold-gen support economy and hurts pure farm-until-online picks.
- AP no longer melts turrets. Champion damage to turrets converts 20% of Ability Power instead of 40%, on top of turret health rising about 15% at every tier (outer 3000β3500, inner 3250β3750, inhibitor 3500β4000, nexus 2600β2750). If your plan was an AP splitpusher taking towers alone, budget for a longer siege or bring physical damage.
- Jungle camps got tanky later, not earlier. Camp maximum health scaling went from 250% to 315%. Riot states the first clear is unaffected; non-epic monsters end up with 5β25% more health in the mid and late game. Junglers with weak clears need their clear item sooner, not later.
Runes: the pre-game stat sheet
Classic uses the pre-2018 rune system. Each page holds 9 Marks, 9 Seals, 9 Glyphs and 3 Quintessences, bought with Influence Points earned by playing. Runes come in three tiers, gated behind your Classic Level β historically tier 2 unlocked at summoner level 10 and tier 3 ("Greater" runes) at level 20.
For scale, per the wiki's historical rune documentation, era-accurate tier-3 values were modest per rune and decisive in bulk: a Greater Seal of Armor gave +1 armor, a Greater Glyph of Magic Resist +1.34 MR, a Greater Mark of Attack Damage +0.95 AD. A full page swings a lane by roughly a Doran's item worth of stats.
Run the era defaults until the meta settles: armor Seals and MR Glyphs on everyone, AD Marks and Quints on physical champions, magic penetration Marks with AP or move-speed Quints on mages. Don't overthink page 2.
Patch 26.16 made the rune gap much less punishing. Empty rune slots are filled by placeholder stats, and those placeholders now give 80% of the equivalent rune's value instead of 66% β so a low-level Classic account starts a game closer to even against a fully runed one. Scaling Armor Seals also went from 0.15 to 0.17 armor per level. Practical rule: don't grind Influence Points before you play, and don't dodge lobbies over rune pages.
The same patch added eight runes to the Classic store, four of them energy runes for the three ninjas who arrived with it:
| Slot | New rune | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Mark | Minor Mark of Ability Power | 0.7 AP |
| Seal | Seal of Energy Regeneration | 0.7 energy per 5s |
| Glyph | Glyph of Energy | 2.3 max energy |
| Glyph | Minor Glyph of Mana Regeneration | 0.33 mana per 5s |
| Quintessence | Quintessence of Energy | 6 max energy |
| Quintessence | Quintessence of Energy Regeneration | 1.8 energy per 5s |
| Quintessence | Quintessence of Health Regeneration | 1.3 health per 5s |
| Quintessence | Quintessence of Mana | 38 maximum health |
The last row is Riot's own text, and it doesn't match the rune's name β the notes list "Quintessence of Mana: 38 Maximum Health." Assume the label or the value is a typo and check the tooltip in the store before you spend on it.
If you're playing Akali, Kennen or Shen, buy the energy Seals, Glyphs and Quintessences first. Their kits refund energy on hit but drain it on combos, and the pre-26.16 rune store had nothing to smooth that out.
Masteries: 30 points, three trees
The old Offense / Defense / Utility trees are back, 30 points total, per the wiki's Summoner Mastery documentation. Run 21/9/0 for damage plus early toughness (the solo laner and jungler default), 9/21/0 on tanks, 0/9/21 on supports living off gold-gen and cooldowns. Pages reset freely via the Return Points button, so experiment between games.

Top Lane Builds
The S3 top lane is a sustain war that turns into a splitpush or frontline job.
- Start: Doran's Blade on fighters, Doran's Shield in rough matchups, Crystalline Flask plus potions in attrition lanes. The late-2013 Doran's Blade (wiki archive, V3.14) was 440 gold for 8 attack damage, 70 health and 3% life steal β cheap stats you shouldn't feel bad replacing.
- Bruiser core (Jax, Olaf, Wukong, Jarvan): Trinity Force or The Black Cleaver as the damage anchor, then durability chosen off the enemy team β Randuin's Omen or Frozen Heart into AD, Spirit Visage or Banshee's Veil into AP, Guardian Angel as the closer. Buy The Brutalizer as the mid-game efficiency pickup on cooldown-hungry fighters.
- Tank core (Malphite, Dr. Mundo, Singed): Sunfire Cape, Warmog's Armor, Randuin's Omen, Spirit Visage. Dr. Mundo and Singed in particular want the Warmog's-plus-resists stack the S3 shop supports. Atma's Impaler exists for the nostalgic Warmog's-Atma's pairing, though it was already a meme by S3.
- Splitpushers (Jax, Tryndamere, Nasus): add Zephyr or Frozen Mallet for stickiness and keep a Vision Ward in your pocket. With no trinkets, your flank safety is bought, not free.
Jungle Builds
The S3 jungle is item-defined: your clear and your usefulness both come out of the machete tree.
- Start: Hunter's Machete plus potions, into Madred's Razors, then take a fork.
- Wriggle's Lantern for AD duelists and counter-junglers (Lee Sin, Olaf, Warwick): sustain, a free ward on a timer, and the path toward Feral Flare if you want a farm-scaling game.
- Spirit Stone for everyone else, upgrading to Spirit of the Ancient Golem on tanks (Amumu, Skarner, Nunu), Spirit of the Elder Lizard on AD skirmishers, or Spirit of the Spectral Wraith on AP junglers (Fiddlesticks, Evelynn).
- After the jungle item: build to your archetype. Engage tanks go Locket of the Iron Solari or Runic Bulwark, carries go standard damage cores. Boots of Mobility is a genuine option on gank-heavy junglers in a mode with slower mid rotations.
- Always: carry wards. The S3 jungle is won on vision denial, and Vision Wards actually kill enemy wards here.
Mid Lane Builds
S3 mid is the least changed role conceptually β mages building AP β but the spine is different.
- Start: Doran's Ring or flask; Sapphire Crystal into Catalyst the Protector if you're mana-hungry.
- The AP spine: everything routes through Rabadon's Deathcap. Before it, pick your survival tool: Zhonya's Hourglass (via Seeker's Armguard) into AD assassins and dives, Athene's-style regen via Chalice of Harmony for grind lanes, or Rod of Ages (Catalyst first) for scaling comfort on Anivia and Ryze types.
- The execute build: Deathfire Grasp is back and as rude as remembered. Its Season 3 form (wiki archive, V3.02) was 3,100 gold for 120 AP and 10% cooldown reduction, with an active dealing 15% of the target's max health in magic damage and amplifying your follow-up magic damage by 20% for 4 seconds. DFG into combo is the assassination pattern for Annie, Veigar and Ahri.
- Utility mages (Twisted Fate, Zilean, Lulu mid): buy Shurelya's Reverie and Twin Shadows. Speed and pick tools scale with a roam-heavy plan.
- Finish with: Void Staff when resists stack, Lich Bane on hybrid-scaling patterns, Mejai's Soulstealer if you're feeling honest about your deaths.
ADC & Bot Lane Builds
The S3 ADC path is close to muscle memory if you played the era, and instructive if you didn't.
- Start: Doran's Blade, or Doran's Shield into hard poke.
- The classic crit core: B.F. Sword into Infinity Edge, then an attack-speed crit item (Phantom Dancer or the S3 star Statikk Shiv), then Last Whisper the moment armor appears. Add Bloodthirster for the raw stat lead β its late-S3 form (wiki archive, V3.14) was 3,200 gold for 70 AD and 12% life steal, with the era's stacking passive that grows on kills and vanishes on death. Close with a defensive slot: Guardian Angel, Banshee's Veil, Quicksilver Sash or Mercurial Scimitar against lockdown.
- On-hit and utility variants: Blade of the Ruined King for dueling ADCs like Vayne, Frozen Mallet for permaslow Ashe-style kiting, Runaan's Hurricane for waveclear-hungry picks like Kog'Maw and Twitch.
- Ezreal note: the S3 blue-build spine is fully assembled in Classic's item list β Tear of the Goddess into Manamune and Muramana, with Iceborn Gauntlet in the shop. It was obnoxious then and nothing has changed.
Support Builds
S3 support is an economy class. Your build is a machine for generating gold and vision from nothing.
- Start with a gold-generation item. Take Philosopher's Stone on sustain supports (final pre-removal state, wiki archive: 700 gold for 7 health regen and 9 mana regen per 5 seconds, plus 5 gold per 10 seconds), Heart of Gold on tanky engage supports (825 gold, +200 health, 5 gold per 10; removed from modern League for being too broadly efficient, and named in Riot's own Classic launch material), or Kage's Lucky Pick on AP supports who poke.
- Rush Sightstone, then Ruby Sightstone. The S3-patch Sightstone (wiki archive, V3.01) cost 950 gold total for 180 health and refillable ward charges, with a cap on simultaneous wards. Add Vision Wards and Oracle's Elixir to fight the enemy's vision.
- Then work the aura shelf: Aegis of the Legion into Runic Bulwark, Locket of the Iron Solari, Shurelya's Reverie for engage and peel, Mikael's Crucible against lockdown, Zeke's Herald for AD-heavy teams, Will of the Ancients for AP poke comps, Twin Shadows for pick comps. Six slots of buttons is the job.
- Upgrade Philosopher's Stone into Shurelya's, Mikael's, Ohmwrecker or Eleisa's Miracle, matching its historical recipe tree.
