Tier List Overview
| Tier | Weapons |
|---|---|
| S | Great Sword, Heavy Bowgun, Long Sword |
| A | Dual Blades, Sword & Shield, Switch Axe, Charge Blade |
| B | Hammer, Hunting Horn, Lance, Bow, Insect Glaive |
| C | Gunlance, Light Bowgun |
Important: Every weapon can clear every fight. This tier list reflects how easily and efficiently each weapon performs in the hardest content, not whether it's "viable." A skilled Lance main will outdamage a mediocre Great Sword user every time.
S Tier
Great Sword
The king of burst damage. The Focus Mode True Charged Slash is the single highest damage attack in the game, and GS has only gotten stronger with Artian weapons and Armor Transcendence.
Why S Tier:
- Highest per-hit damage in the game
- Focus Mode TCS deals absurd numbers on downed monsters
- Artian Varianza+ is the best raw weapon in the game
- Shoulder tackle provides excellent survivability
- Excellent for part breaks (crucial for Gogmazios and 10β )
Best Build: Artian Varianza+ with 4-piece Gore Magala + Zoh Shia chest. Focus Boost 3, Weakness Exploit 3, Critical Boost 3.
Weakness: Slow and punishing if you mistime charges. Not ideal for players who struggle with monster openings.
Heavy Bowgun
Spread HBG with evade reloading is a damage machine. The Artian Obliterator+ made HBG the go-to for speedruns, and its ability to maintain constant DPS uptime is unmatched.
Why S Tier:
- Consistent high DPS with Spread ammo
- Evade reload keeps you mobile and shooting
- Excellent at hitting specific hitzones (head sniping)
- Strong in both solo and multiplayer
- Dragon ammo for Gogmazios Phase 3
Best Build: Artian Obliterator+ with Spread Up 3, Evade Extender 2, Spare Shot. Gore Magala 4-piece for Black Eclipse affinity.
Weakness: Ammo management on extended fights. Shot hitzones on Gogmazios are poor β consider melee for that specific fight.
Long Sword
The community's most popular weapon for good reason. The counter-based playstyle meshes perfectly with Focus Mode, and the Black Eclipse + Coalescence synergy gives LS insane damage during Frenzy windows.
Why S Tier:
- Counter gameplay is extremely rewarding
- Spirit gauge management provides built-in damage buffs
- Focus Mode counters are fast and safe
- Black Eclipse LS from Gore Magala is top-tier
- Excellent survivability with proper counter timing
Best Build: Gore Magala LS with 4-piece Gore + Zoh Shia chest. Black Eclipse II triggers Coalescence for massive attack boosts.
Weakness: High skill ceiling for counter timing. Performance drops significantly if you can't land counters consistently.
A Tier
Dual Blades
The elemental damage king. With the right element for each matchup, Dual Blades shred through monsters. Zoh Shia sets enhanced elemental builds significantly.
Why A Tier:
- Best elemental damage in the game
- Excellent for burning oil off Gogmazios
- Very fast attack speed for status application
- Demon Mode provides great mobility
- Low commitment attacks mean fewer carts
Best Build: Element-specific weapons (Fire, Ice, Thunder, Dragon depending on monster). Zoh Shia set for elemental boost. Element Attack 5, Critical Element, Weakness Exploit 3.
Why not S: Relies heavily on having the right element. Raw DB builds are significantly weaker than GS/HBG raw builds.
Sword & Shield
The Swiss Army knife. SnS can do everything β DPS, support, KO, elemental, status. Its versatility makes it invaluable in multiplayer, especially in 10β content where teams need a support player.
Why A Tier:
- Can use items while weapon is drawn
- Perfect Rush combo deals excellent damage
- Best support weapon in the game (Wide-Range builds)
- Shield provides emergency blocks
- KO potential with shield bashes
Best Build: For DPS: Artian SnS with Offensive Guard, Weakness Exploit. For Support: Wide-Range 5, Free Meal 3, Speed Eating 3 with any comfort SnS.
Why not S: Pure DPS output falls behind S-tier weapons. Often pigeonholed into support role in multiplayer.
Switch Axe
Phial bursts are devastating. The ability to switch between Sword and Axe modes gives incredible flexibility, and the Zero Sum Discharge on downed monsters is one of the highest DPS windows available.
Why A Tier:
- Phial burst damage is excellent
- Mode switching provides tactical flexibility
- Zero Sum Discharge on downs is massive DPS
- Power Axe mode has great reach
- Good elemental and raw options
Best Build: Artian SA for raw, or elemental SAs for specific matchups. Focus Boost 3, Rapid Morph 3, Power Prolonger 2.
Why not S: Needs more commitment to attacks than LS/GS. Sword Mode has limited mobility.
Charge Blade
Impact phials deal KO damage and big numbers. Guard Points provide a defensive counter option similar to LS, and SAED spam remains effective in endgame.
Why A Tier:
- Guard Points are an excellent defensive tool
- SAED deals massive AoE damage
- Impact phials cause KO
- Can play offensively or defensively
- Savage Axe mode for sustained DPS
Best Build: Artian CB with Artillery 3, Focus Boost 3, Guard 3, Offensive Guard 3.
Why not S: Complex weapon with high skill floor. Phial management adds cognitive overhead in already demanding 10β fights.
B Tier
Hammer
The KO king. Hammer's Focus Mode charged attacks hit like a truck, and the KO utility is valuable for creating team openings. The issue is reaching the head consistently on larger monsters.
Why B Tier:
- Highest KO potential
- Simple and satisfying gameplay
- Big Bang combo on downed monsters is excellent
- Good raw damage options
Limitations: Needs to hit the head for KO, which is hard on tall monsters. Limited reach compared to other weapons. Lacks the counter tools of LS/GS/CB.
Hunting Horn
Buffs and beats. HH provides team-wide attack and defense buffs that are incredibly valuable in 10β and AT content. The damage got better in Wilds, but it's still primarily a support/utility weapon.
Why B Tier:
- Team-wide buffs (Attack Up L, Defense Up L) are massive in hard content
- Self-improvement makes you fast and unflinching
- Decent KO with note attacks
- Melodic Slap combo does good damage
Limitations: Lower personal DPS than other melee weapons. Need to maintain songs while fighting, adding complexity. Teams generally only need one HH.
Lance
The ultimate tank. Lance can block everything, counter everything, and maintain constant pressure. It's incredibly safe but lacks the burst damage of higher-tier weapons.
Why B Tier:
- Guard Up + Guard 5 blocks almost every attack
- Counter-thrust and Power Guard provide continuous offense
- Extremely safe playstyle β fewest carts
- Consistent, steady DPS
Limitations: Lowest burst damage. Mobility is limited without Evade Extender. Fights take longer, which matters in timed content.
Bow
Ranged precision with elemental versatility. Bow excels at elemental damage from safe distance, but stamina management and shot hitzones can be tricky.
Why B Tier:
- Excellent elemental damage from range
- Dash dancing provides great mobility
- Can target any hitzone consistently
- Power Shot and Dragon Piercer for burst
Limitations: Stamina-hungry gameplay. Constitution and Stamina Surge skills are mandatory. Bows are expensive to build (need one per element). Shot hitzones on some endgame monsters are poor.
Insect Glaive
Aerial freedom and extract buffs. IG has unique aerial mobility and the Kinsect system provides damage buffs. Solid all-rounder that struggles to compete with specialists.
Why B Tier:
- Aerial attacks dodge ground-based AoE
- Triple extract buff provides significant stat boost
- Fast attacking with decent combos
- Kinsect provides free ranged damage
Limitations: Aerial damage is lower than grounded combos. Extract management is an extra system to juggle. Ground combos, while improved, still trail A/S-tier melee weapons.
C Tier
Gunlance
Shelling ignores hitzones, which sounds great β except shelling damage doesn't scale well into endgame. Fixed damage falls behind raw/elemental scaling with Transcended armor and endgame skills.
Why C Tier:
- Shelling damage doesn't scale with attack buffs
- Wyrmstake and Full Burst have long animations (punishing in 10β )
- Shield is good but Lance does the tank job better
- Limited build variety
Saving grace: Wyvern's Fire still hits hard. Gunlance is fine for standard content but struggles in the DPS checks of 10β and AT fights.
Light Bowgun
LBG offers mobility and status application but its raw damage output is significantly below HBG. In a meta where DPS checks matter (Gogmazios Phase 3, AT enrage timers), LBG's lower damage ceiling hurts.
Why C Tier:
- Lower damage than HBG across all ammo types
- Rapid Fire doesn't compensate for per-shot damage gap
- Status application (sleep/para) is useful but niche
- Mobility advantage over HBG is less relevant with evade reload
Saving grace: Excellent for applying status in multiplayer. Sleep bombing and paralysis are genuinely helpful for team play.
What Changed in v1.041
The February 2026 patch was the final balance pass. Key changes:
- Armor Transcendence pushed raw damage even higher, widening the gap between high-scaling weapons (GS, HBG) and fixed-damage weapons (GL)
- AT Arkveld and 10β quests reward burst damage and safe play, favoring counter-based weapons (LS, GS, CB)
- Gogmazios 10β requires both Fire and Dragon damage, boosting Dual Blades and Switch Axe value
- Support SnS became nearly mandatory for 10β multiplayer, cementing its A-tier position
- No significant weapon mechanic changes β the meta has stabilized
