Gogmazios Complete Guide - TU4 Elder Dragon
Gogmazios is here, and it's absolutely brutal. This Elder Dragon arrived in Title Update 4 as one of the most mechanically demanding fights in Monster Hunter Wilds. Don't worry though - once you understand its patterns and the arena mechanics, you'll be farming it in no time. Well, maybe not "no time," but you'll get there.

Unlock Requirements
Before you can face Gogmazios, you need to:
- Reach Hunter Rank 100 (HR100)
- Complete "A First Cry" - the main quest prerequisite
- Complete extra quests: "An Ancient Resting Place" and "Ghosts Pay No Heed To Tomorrow"
- Talk to Olivia in Oilwell Basin to start the quest chain
- Be prepared - this is a 30-50 minute fight for first-timers
Important: Gogmazios can only be fought online. There's no offline option for this hunt, so make sure you have a stable internet connection.
8-Player Siege
This is an 8-player siege battle - up to 4 main hunters plus 4 support hunters can participate, similar to the 4U siege format. The support hunters spawn in a separate area and can assist with environmental mechanics.
Understanding Gogmazios
Gogmazios is a massive Elder Dragon covered in crude oil-like substance. This tar-like coating is both its defense mechanism and your key to victory.
Key Characteristics
- Size: One of the largest monsters in Wilds
- Element: Dragon (primarily) with Fire attacks
- Status: Can inflict Dragonblight and Fireblight
- Unique Mechanic: Oil coating that changes elemental weaknesses
Hitzones Overview
| Body Part | Cutting | Blunt | Shot | Fire | Dragon |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Head (oiled) | 30 | 35 | 25 | 25 | 5 |
| Head (clean) | 45 | 50 | 40 | 5 | 30 |
| Body (oiled) | 25 | 25 | 20 | 20 | 5 |
| Body (clean) | 40 | 40 | 35 | 5 | 25 |
| Tail | 35 | 30 | 30 | 15 | 15 |
Notice something? The oil coating drastically changes which elements work. This is the core of the fight.
The Fire-Dragon Element Combo
Here's the most important thing to understand about this fight: Gogmazios has a three-state oil system that determines elemental weaknesses.
The Three Oil States
- Solid (Hardened) - Oil is cold and hardened. Low damage from all sources.
- Liquid (Heated) - Fire damage softens the oil into liquid state. Moderate damage.
- Gaseous (Burned off) - Oil is completely burned away, exposing raw flesh. Maximum Dragon damage.
Step 1: Burn Off the Oil with Fire
When Gogmazios is coated in oil (it starts in the solid state), Fire damage is your friend. Fire attacks will:
- Heat and soften the hardened oil (solid β liquid)
- Gradually "clean" the body parts (liquid β gaseous/exposed)
- Eventually strip away the oil, exposing raw flesh
You'll know a part is "clean" when:
- The visual oil texture disappears
- The monster flinches more from hits to that area
- Your Fire damage starts doing less
Tip: Focus Fire damage on the wingarms - they're easiest to knock down.
Step 2: Punish with Dragon Element
Once the oil is burned off (gaseous state), switch to Dragon element weapons. Clean flesh takes massive Dragon damage while becoming resistant to Fire.
Important: The oil will eventually cool and re-harden, requiring you to repeat the cycle.
The Practical Application
Many groups run a mixed setup:
- 2 Fire weapon users: Focus on burning oil throughout the fight
- 2 Dragon weapon users: Capitalize on exposed weak points
Or, bring both weapon types and swap mid-hunt (if you're using item box).
Phase 1: Environmental Control
The first phase takes place in the Ancient Forge arena. Your goal: deal enough damage to trigger the Phase 2 transition while using environmental tools.
Environmental Mechanics
Boulders
- Located around the edges of the arena
- Can be triggered to fall on Gogmazios
- Deal significant damage and cause knockdowns
- Use them early - they don't respawn
Fire Plume Vents
- Scattered throughout the floor
- Can be activated to create fire pillars
- Great for burning oil off Gogmazios
- Have a cooldown between uses
Environmental Traps
- Similar to standard hunt traps
- Can immobilize Gogmazios briefly
- Use during Phase 1 for free damage windows
Phase 1 Strategy
- Immediately hit a boulder when the fight starts
- Focus Fire damage on the head and front legs
- Use Fire Plume vents when Gogmazios walks over them
- Avoid standing in oil pools - they slow you down and deal damage
- Watch for the oil breath attack - it covers a huge area
Phase 1 ends when you deal approximately 25% of Gogmazios's total HP.
Phase 2: The Great Furnace
Phase 2 introduces the arena's main mechanic: The Great Furnace and the Elderbreaker Cannon.
The Great Furnace
A massive furnace in the arena that can be activated. When lit:
- Creates a fire zone in the center
- Deals continuous Fire damage to Gogmazios
- Helps burn oil faster
- Requires fuel (found around the arena)
Elderbreaker Cannon
A mounted cannon that deals massive damage. Here's how to use it:
- Connect three Loose Nexus nodes - These are scattered around the arena and must be linked to power the cannon
- Wait for the charge - The cannon charges from 60% to 100%
- Aim for the head for maximum damage
- Fire at full charge - A fully charged headshot can deal 80,000+ damage
- Permanent armor break - Successful hits will permanently destroy Gogmazios's armor in that area
Pro Tip: Designate one player as "cannon duty." Having someone consistently manning the Elderbreaker is often better than everyone trying to use it randomly.
Phase 2 Strategy
- Keep the Furnace running - assign someone to fuel it
- Use the Elderbreaker during knockdowns
- Continue burning oil - you want as much clean flesh as possible for Phase 3
- Position the fight near the Furnace when possible
Phase 2 transitions around 50% HP remaining.
Phase 3: The DPS Check
Phase 3 is where things get serious. This is essentially a DPS check - you need to deal enough Dragon damage before Gogmazios's enrage timer runs out. In this phase, Gogmazios enters a gaseous state and becomes airborne.
The Compact Anti-Wyvern Gun
A powerful mounted weapon that becomes available in Phase 3. The Compact Anti-Wyvern Gun:
- Provides slinger ammo to attack the airborne Gogmazios
- Target the wings, tail, and head while it's flying
- Must hit Gogmazios's head for maximum effect
- Is your best tool for closing out the fight
Chimney Pillars
Two chimney pillar structures can be triggered to fall on Gogmazios:
- Causes massive damage when hit
- Useful for creating knockdown opportunities
- Time these carefully during the flying phase
The DPS Check Explained
In Phase 3, Gogmazios becomes increasingly aggressive. If you take too long:
- Its attacks become more frequent
- Oil regenerates faster
- A team wipe ultimate attack will trigger
You need to deal enough Dragon damage or break the head or back to cancel this mechanic. The wipe attack cannot be blocked - you must prevent it through DPS.
Phase 3 Strategy
- Everyone should be using Dragon element now (unless keeping oil burned)
- Focus the head - breaking it deals massive damage and cancels enrage
- Use the Compact Anti-Wyvern Gun slinger ammo when Gogmazios is airborne
- Trigger chimney pillars for additional knockdown opportunities
- Stay aggressive - passive play will get you timed out
- Save any remaining boulders for emergency knockdowns

- Long Sword: Shagaru Magala LS
- Switch Axe: Excellent Dragon options
- Heavy Bowgun: Dragon ammo for consistent DPS
A Note on Bowguns
Community feedback: Bowguns (both Light and Heavy) struggle in this fight due to poor shot hitzones and limited Dragon ammo capacity. The shot hitzones on Gogmazios are notably worse than melee hitzones, making ranged weapons less effective overall. If you main bowgun, consider trying a melee weapon for this fight or focus heavily on environmental mechanics.
Hybrid Approach
Charge Blade and Switch Axe can use phial bursts for Fire, then swap to Dragon phials. This requires preparation but offers flexibility.

Multiplayer Tips
Team Composition
This is an 8-player siege (4 main + 4 support). For the main party, ideal 4-player setup:
- 1 Tank/Support: Guard-focused build with Wide-Range
- 1 Fire DPS: Burns oil throughout

Final Tips
Gogmazios is a marathon, not a sprint. Your first few attempts will likely time out or fail - that's normal. Focus on learning the mechanics:
- First attempt: Learn the arena and environmental tools
- Second attempt: Practice phase transitions
- Third attempt: Optimize your element swapping
- Fourth attempt onward: Go for the clear
The feeling when you finally down this beast is incredible. Good luck, hunter - you're going to need it.
